Introducing our new CALENDULA PROTECT CREAM and limited-edition OIL IN LOTION — calendula, grown by the nature of Awaji Island

From the nature of Awaji Island comes calendula — a new everyday cream and a limited-edition oil-in-lotion

A large, vivid orange bloom that catches the eye the moment you see it. Its beauty is shaped by an environment unlike any other.
Two new products featuring calendula grown on Awaji Island — nurtured by its rich nature and sea breezes — are now arriving: the new everyday CALENDULA PROTECT CREAM and the limited-edition CALENDULA OIL IN LOTION.

Calendula has long been valued as a plant that helps keep skin in good condition after dryness or irritation, and is sometimes called the 'skin guardian'. It has been used in skincare for centuries.
The variety we have chosen is 'Muraji', a native calendula cultivar grown by Hirota Farm on Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. Raised without pesticides, with careful attention given to each plant by hand, it produces large orange flowers that can grow to more than 10cm across.

Drawing fully on the qualities of 'Muraji', the CALENDULA PROTECT CREAM arrives as an everyday product — a cream that helps shield skin from dryness and other irritants while keeping it moisturised. The limited-edition CALENDULA OIL IN LOTION brings together calendula oil and extract in their entirety, resulting in a two-layer lotion that helps balance skin with a fresh, dewy moisture.

We hope you enjoy everything that 'Muraji' has to offer — a calendula full of vitality, shaped by the natural environment of Awaji Island.

STORY

The vivid, vital beauty of the 'Muraji' grown by Hirota Farm is shaped by an environment unique to this place. Awaji Island enjoys generous sunshine throughout the year, allowing plants to grow in the full light they need. Surrounded by the sea, with a relatively mild and gentle climate, the island creates a comfortable growing environment for plants — one that draws out the natural vitality of each flower. Growing slowly in these conditions, the petals take on their striking colour and bloom with quiet strength.

STORY

In winter, cold sea winds bring harsher conditions to the island. It is said that this exposure encourages the calendula to build its own resilience, storing nutrients within the petals. The gentle side of nature nurtures the plant steadily; the harsher side is said to draw out its strength further. It is the combination of both that gives this land its particularly vital calendula.

SHIRO's skincare is rooted in a wish to convey not only the qualities of the ingredients themselves, but also the environment in which they grow and the care put into them by the people who grow them. We hope you enjoy the qualities of 'Muraji' calendula, nurtured by the rich nature of Awaji Island, as part of your everyday skincare.

PARTNER

Hirota Farm / Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture

Hirota Farm has been cultivating calendula for over 50 years. Today, the farm is run single-handedly by Mr Hirota, using cultivation methods free from pesticides — including hand-picking insects and weeding entirely by hand. During the harvest season, volunteers and friends lend their support, picking each flower with care one by one. Mr Hirota was drawn to calendula partly because it is an edible flower, and has continued to grow the native 'Muraji' variety with the hope of sharing its qualities with more people. While facing the challenge of finding a successor, he continues to look for ways to carry this work forward into the future.

Notice of Discontinuation

The launch of CALENDULA PROTECT CREAM, and the resulting review of our lineup, means that CALENDULA CREAM will be discontinued once current stock is sold, while supplies last.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvieniense this may cause, and we sincerely thank you for your continued support over the years.
